i lungarni

scalo in ponte di mezzo

19th century etching
Questo lungarno è uno spettacolo così bello, così ampio, così magnifico...

...and bright to be captivating. I have not seen anything of the like in Florence, nor in Milan or Rome; and I do not know indeed whether there can be many such sights in Europe. Strolling there is such a pleasure even in the winter, since the air is always like spring; so that at certain times of the day that stretch is filled by a multitude of carriages and walkers: one or two dozen different languages can be heard, and a brilliant sun shines on the gilt surfaces of cafes and well-stocked shops, and on the window panes of houses and buildings, all beautifully constructed. For the rest, Pisa is something between a large city and small one, a mixture of urban and rustic - and one so romantic that I have never seen its equal”.

These are not my own words, but those of the great Italian poet Giacomo Leopardi, who spent the winter of 1828/29 in Pisa. These words, better than any others, describe what is the Lungarno and what a pleasure it is to be strolling there in a carriage..
